GRANDAD It is a pity this picture was made to fit the embossed mounts instead of being trimmed so that the subject would fit more agreeably into the picture area. It should have been made a little wider and the subject should have been placed a little higher. We notice that only a part of the negative was enlarged but the arrangement of the subject was not very carefully considered in doing this. Such mounts as this one are often very suitable for views when the subject fills the entire area of the plate, but portraits usually need to be arranged in such a manner that the head, which is usually the chief point of interest, comes in a "strong" position; not exactly in the center as is the case in this picture, but about one-third of the space from one side and the top. This will add dignity and force to the portrait. There is just a trace of harshness in the highlights in this print, but the lighting, on the whole, is well managed and the use of a long-focus lens has given good drawing. The chair that was used is not very suitable for a picture; it is far too assertive and detracts from the figure to a great extent. It is often advisable to sacrifice comfort and convenience for pictorial effect. We have indicated by pencil lines on the print a suggestion for trimming which, we think, would improve the spacing of the picture and add to the interest. The exposure given, 8 seconds at /:6.8, seems to be rather long in view of the fact that the light was good and the subject appears to be sitting close to the window, but too much exposure, provided it does not clog up the highlights, is always better than too littl...
